Welcome to WDET’s 2009 Elections Blog.
This year’s election will be remembered as a transformational moment for the city of Detroit. Residents will select the mayor who will lead Detroit into the post-Kilpatrick era. There will be a historic level of turnover in City Council. A Charter Commission will be selected with the charge of considering sweeping, once-in-a-generation changes. The candidates running for the Detroit Public School Board will have the responsibility of helping to remold the education of the city’s children.
With all that in mind, WDET decided to take a slightly different approach to its election coverage this year. We’re launching a coordinated community reporting project called “The Detroit Agenda”.
WDET reporters and producers are traveling to just about every neighborhood in the city — talking to hundreds of residents about what they want to see in their communities — and how their elected officials can help. We’ll use that information to interview candidates and to dig into what Detroiters would like to see changed in the years ahead.
On this blog, you’ll see resident interviews and pictures. You’ll hear them talk about their communities in ways not often heard in the media. You’ll also hear from the candidates — 48 of them in all. They’ll talk about their vision for Detroit’s future — and what decisions they plan to make to help that vision come true.
We hope this resource makes it easier for you to make your decisions in the voting booth on November third.
Sincerely,
Jerome Vaughn — WDET News Director
